Biometic has developed the revolutionary IAXSYS™ platform to transform any standard cell culture setup into a tissue-engineering-ready bioreactor system. This dynamic platform is fully compatible with established aseptic culture techniques, culture plates, and incubators. This not only ensures practicality, and familiarity for users, but also mitigates the risk of contamination and infection. These are key obstacles for conventional bioreactors that are compounded by typically low numbers of culture replicates and high cost of bioreactor components. In contrast, the IAXSYS™ system places a priority on maintaining existing tissue biolab practice and running costs. This intuitive system provides advanced biomechanic actuation functionality and integration with a variety of culture constructs including bioglass-incorporated variotis™ scaffolds manufactured by Biometic.

By using a sealed permanent magnetic couple, sterile barrier is maintained, and cell culture plates may be shuffled on and off the IAXSYS™ in turn to provide further assay versatility. The proprietary rare-earth magnetic coupling avoids subjecting the cell culture to undesirable magnetic field variation and electromagnetic radiation associated with proximal electromagnetic trasducers.

The IAXSYS™ servo-actuator can supply up to 30N total force to the well insert magnetic couplings at up to 3 Hz(with standard culture strain settings). The strain achievable is nominally 15mm. These actuation capacities are ample for most soft-tissue culture applications. A high torque actuator option (70N) is also available. The highly portable IAXSYS™ platform is powered and controlled by a 1.66Ghz Atom Netbook Windows 7 PC. The IAXSYS™ software interface is user-friendly yet powerful. Real-time plot of several channels is provided and the controller monitor and may be recorded for data output or graphically captured for export and analysis.

IAXSYS™ systems have been designed for a wide variety of applications: cartilage tissue engineering, skin tissue engineering, lung tissue engineering, dynamic tumour cell culture, odontogenesis models, through to even non-culture in vivi simulation models for studying calcification under vivo cyclic strain. Technical and partner-site support is available for all IAXSYS™ related systems.

New in vitro research horizons have opened with the versatile IAXSYS™ and variotis™ platforms. In vivo biomechanics can be reliable induced in vitro for assays and six or more replicates using the IAXSYS™ . Biocompatible well inserts and scaffold systems allow single-axis or multi-axis biomechanics to be induced concurrently within each cell well. A variety of wave-forms may be applied to replicate near-physiologic pulsatile strain, rest periods and even gradual growth or pressure gradients. Well inserts can be coupled to Bioglass containing variotis™ scaffolds for dynamic 3D culture. to 2D cell-adherent membranes, or to ex-vivo tissues. The variotis™ scaffolds, membranes and inserts can be readily bonded using xkin™ biocompatible adhesive or by applying gentle heat to provide customizable dynamic tissue engineerinng constructs. A Varioset™ kit is also available to form variotis scaffolds to a specific thickness, porosity or pore-gradient to suit a particular cell or tissue assay.
